Should we need to cite an image or figure or table while using in our research paper, presentations, dissertations or thesis ? Answer is yes. If we take any image or figure or table from a journal article which is copyrighted or from a journal article with creative commons license or from a book or from a website or webpage we have to cite it and give an credit to the original author in the form of a copyright attribution. APA 7th edition gives guidelines for appropriately citing an image or figure or table. There are two ways to take an image/figure/table. Either we copy the image/figure/table without any modification(Reprinting) or we make suitable changes to the image/figure/table(Adapting) and use it . A copyright attribution is used instead of an author-date in-text citation to credit reprinted or adapted image/figure/table and each of these works also should appear in the reference list.
To write a copyright attribution
- State whether the material was reprinted or adapted--Use ''From" for reprintings and "Adapted from " for adaptations
- Provide the title, author, year of publication and the source of the material
- Indicate the materials copyright status, which will be the copyright year and the name of the copyright holder, a statement that the works is licensed in the creative commons or the statement that the works is in the public domain
- Provide the permission statement as requested by the copyright holder if the permission was sought and obtained
Place the copyright attribution at the end of the general note for the table or figure
