HUMAN LIBRARY PROJECT

The Human Library Project, a unique initiative organized by the Department of Library and Information Science at the University of Calicut, took place on November 6th and 7th, 2023, as part of National Library Week. The event aimed to bring together diverse voices and experiences through living books.
This special event brought together 30 "human books," each with a unique story to tell. From the secrets of happiness to tales of marriage, and even experiences with artificial intelligence, the human books represented a diverse group, including professors, ward members, and canteen employees.
Over 200 readers, including students, professors, and regular folks, joined in the two-day program at the University of Calicut Park. The two-day program kicked off with an inspiring inaugural session. Mariyath, a human book on happiness, set the tone, followed by inaugural  speech from Dr. Vasudevan TM, Dr. Mohammed Haneefa K, Dr. Syamili C, Dr Lakshmi, Welcoming notes from students Veena and Arjun.
The first day unfolded with captivating conversations on happiness, artificial intelligence, ex-military life, and  lesbian dating and many more. It was more than just a sharing of stories; it was a celebration of the richness of human experiences.

The excitement continued into Day 2, starting with the Vice Chancellor of Calicut university, MK Jayaraj, becoming the first human book, sharing his experiences as a VC. Other captivating stories unfolded, touching on topics like the Indian Constitution, research methodologies, the joy of reading, and challenges faced by tribal communities in education and more.

The program was a big hit. Readers described the experience as "beautiful," urging the organizers to continue such wonderful projects. The human books, too, expressed their happiness and were grateful for the chance to be a part of something so special

Shelf Safari: Treasure Hunt

 

 To celebrate National Library Week and promote library adoption and human library project, the Forum for Library and Information Science Students organised a treasure hunt called Shelf Safari on November 21, 2023. The hunt took place in different department libraries, including Sanskrit, Zoology, Political Science, Integrated Physical Science and CHMK library. A total of 18 teams registered and took part in this program. After three hours of exploring and searching, Shaheen and Sreejith, students from the Department of Commerce and Management Studies, emerged as the winners. Dr. Vasudevan T. M, the head of the department, awarded them the treasure and a cash prize.

SASTHRAYAN

 

The Department of Library and Information Science organized various programs as part of Sasthrayan at the University of Calicut from November 16th to 18th. The department hosted an exhibition on two themes: 'Beyond the Shelves: A Technological Odyssey in Libraries,' showcasing technological advancements, and 'Resilience and Restoration: Libraries through the Ages,' detailing libraries affected by natural disasters, wars, etc. Additionally, the department created a working makerspace model to highlight its importance in libraries. Visitors could sit in the makerspace and create things like bookmarks, bottle art, paper crafts, etc. The department also introduced the concept of a human library as part of Sasthrayan. They registered people who would like to be ‘human books’ and those interested in being readers for the human library event on December 6. The department has created various human books covering topics such as Depression, Marriage, Cinema, AI, Art, Trading, Dress and styling, etc. Over 100 people attended the department as visitors during the three-day event.

 നവംബർ 14 മുതൽ 20 വരെയുള്ള നാഷണൽ ലൈബ്രറി വരാഘോഷത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി ലൈബ്രറി & ഇൻഫർമേഷൻ പഠനവകുപ്പ് ഗ്രന്ഥശാലകളുടെ സാമൂഹ്യ ധർമ്മം എന്ന വിഷയത്തിൽ പ്രഭാഷണം സംഘടിപ്പിച്ചു.  നവംബർ 15 ന് ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് 2.30 ന് സെമിനാർ ഹാളിൽ വച്ച് നടത്തിയ പരിപാടിയിൽ മുഖ്യ പ്രഭാഷകൻ പ്രൊഫസർ അനിൽ ചെലേമ്പ്ര പ്രസ്തുത വിഷയത്തിൽ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളോടും അധ്യാപകരോടും സംവദിച്ചു. പരിപാടിയിൽ പഠനവകുപ്പ് മേധാവി Dr. T. ലൈബ്രറി & ഇൻഫർമേഷൻ സയൻസ് പഠനവകുപ്പിൽ, ഫോറം ഫോർ ലൈബ്രറി & ഇൻഫർമേഷൻ സയൻസ് സ്റ്റുഡന്റസിന്റെ ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തിൽ 'അ മുതൽ റ വരെ' എന്ന പേരിൽ കേരളപിറവി ദിനവും ഭാഷാദിനവും ആഘോഷിച്ചു. കേരളഗാനത്തോട് കൂടെ തുടങ്ങിയ പരിപാടിയിൽ ഗവേഷക വിദ്യാർത്ഥിനി അഹല്യ സ്വാഗതം പറഞ്ഞു. വകുപ്പ് തല മേധാവി ഡോ. ടി. എം വാസുദേവൻ അധ്യക്ഷസ്ഥാനം വഹിച്ചു. സെനറ്റ് അംഗവും പഠനവകുപ്പിലെ പ്രൊഫസറുമായ ഡോ.മുഹമ്മദ്‌ ഹനീഫ. കെ പരിപാടി ഔദ്യോഗികമായി ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്തു. ഡോ. ശ്യാമിലി, ആവണി, അനുശ്രീ, ദിനു, സരിത, ബീന തുടങ്ങിയവർ പരിപാടിയിൽ സംസാരിച്ചു. യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ലൈബ്രറിയാൻ ഡോ. അബ്‌ദുൾ അസീസ്, കണ്ണൂർ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ലൈബ്രറി & ഇൻഫർമേഷൻ സയൻസ് പഠനവകുപ്പ് മേധാവി ഡോ. അബ്‌ദുൾ മജീദ് എന്നിവർ വിശിഷ്ടാതിഥികൾ ആയി എത്തി ചേർന്നു. മലയാള ഭാഷയും ഭാഷദിനത്തിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യവും എന്ന വിഷയത്തിൽ ഒന്നാം സെമസ്റ്റർ വിദ്യാർത്ഥിനി  റഹ്മത്തുന്നീസ സംസാരിച്ചു. പാട്ടുത്സവം, പ്രശ്നോത്തരി, മലയാളം കളികൾ തുടങ്ങി ഒട്ടനവധി സാംസ്‌കാരിക പരിപാടികൾ പഠനവകുപ്പിൽ അരങ്ങേറി. യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ലൈബ്രറിക്ക് മുന്നിൽ തിരുവാതിര അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് ഉച്ചവരെയുള്ള പരിപാടികൾ അവസാനിച്ചു. ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം സാഹിത്യകാരനും, മലയാളം & കേരള പഠന വകുപ്പിലെ അസിസ്റ്റന്റ് പ്രൊഫസറുമായ ഡോ. എം. ബി മനോജ്‌ മലയാള ഭാഷയും സമകാലിക സാഹിത്യവും എന്ന വിഷയത്തിൽ സംവദിച്ചു. ഒന്നാം സെമസ്റ്റർ വിദ്യാർത്ഥി റഹൂഫ് നന്ദി പ്രകാശിപ്പിച്ചു.

Movie Screening by FLISS

 FLISS screened the Jordanian film named ' Farha ' in solidarity with the people of Palestine on 27th October 2023,Friday.

 

Farha is a 2021 Jordanian film directed by Darin J. Sallam. It tells the story of a 14-year-old Palestinian girl named Farha. 

The film is a powerful and moving depiction of the Palestinian Nakba, or "catastrophe," which refers to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. Farha is a fictional character, but her story is based on the experiences of many real Palestinians who survived the Nakba.

After the screening of the film, students and teachers showed their solidarity with the Palestinian people by turning on the flashlights on their mobile phones.

Manchu O successfully defended her Ph.D. Viva Voce examination under the study titled ‘’ Development and Management of Engineering College Libraries in Kerala ‘’ under the guidance of Prof. Vasudevan T.M. at the seminar hall, DLISc, in a hybrid mode on 16/09/2023. Dr. Chandrashekara, Professor, University of Mysore, was the external examiner. Around 70 people, consisting of library professionals, research scholars, and PG students, attended the open defense.
