National Librarians’ Day:

A tribute to Dr. S. R. Ranganathan and the Future of Library Science


August 12, 2024, marked a significant occasion as we gathered to commemorate National Librarians’ Day, honoring the birth anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the revered father of Library Science. Hosted in the Smart Classroom of the department, the event was organized by FLISS and DLIS. The program was a vibrant tribute to the evolving world of libraries and the indispensable role librarians play in shaping our knowledge landscape. 

The session was anchored by Ms. Athulya A. V. Dr. T. M. Vasudevan, professor and head of the department, presided over the event, lending his expertise and warmth to the proceedings. The inaugural speech was delivered by Dr. Dineshan Koovakkai, retired Assistant librarian from the CHMK Library and now a dedicated Freelance Information Professional. His compelling talk on “Information Management as a Career and Passion” captivated the audience, shedding light on the critical roles libraries play in education, information dissemination, and community engagement. Dr. Koovakkai emphasizes how libraries are evolving with digital transformations and how librarians are crucial in navigating this digital age. His insights emphasized the profound impact libraries have in nurturing an informed and educated society.

Ajmal Shajahan, research scholar, delivered a heartfelt Vote of Thanks. The atmosphere become engaging as Ms. Salini, Ms. Aiswarya and Ms. Gopika took the stage for the quiz program. The audience enthusiastically participated, raising their hands to answer the questions in GK and in Library Science. Correct answers were met with applause and delightful gifts, adding a touch of fun to the day’s activities.

 

The program continued with a thought provoking book talk, Participants including Mr. Fayis, Ms. Akshaya and Ms. Aparna shared their reflections on their favorite books, enriching the conversation with personal thoughts and recommendations. 


As the event drew to close, it was evident that the National Librarians’ day, 2024 not only honored the legacy of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, but also discussed the vibrant future of library science. With a blend of inspiring speeches, interactive activities, and thoughtful reflections, the program showcased the dynamic and evolving role of libraries and librarians in today’s digital world.
