On September 12, 2024, the air was filled with excitement and warmth as FLISS proudly hosted Thakarthonam 2024. This year’s Onam celebration brought together students, faculty, and staff in a delightful tapestry of culture, camaraderie, and community spirit.
The intial events of the colourful day was hosted by Sunisha, Research Scholar. The programme commenced with a heartfelt message from Prof. T. M. Vasudevan, Head of the Department, emphasizing the importance of simplicity in celebrations and the significance of Onam as a time for reflection, gratitude, and togetherness.
Following his words, the cultural programmes took place. Talented students and staff showcased their creativity and passion. The soulful songs performed by Dinu, office staff, Pranav and Aparna, PG students, filled the hall with melodious notes.
Thiruvathirakkali,
performed by our enthusiastic first-semester students, captivated the
audience, and the stunning dance performance by our third-semester
students added an exhilarating touch.
The highlight of the morning was the collaborative creation of the Onapookkalam—a floral carpet that symbolized our unity and respect for nature, crafted lovingly by students and staffs together.
The much-anticipated Onasadhya, the communal feast, served on banana leaves, was not just a meal; it was an experience filled with flavors, laughter, and shared stories and each dish reflected the bountiful harvest and our culinary heritage.
The excitement continued in the Department Courtyard and Portico, where the anchor for the afternoon session, Aparna, kicked off a series of exhilarating and fun filled games. The tug of war competition with MCJ department was the evening's highlight,whitch brought out everyone’s competitive side, sparking laughter and cheers.
Further, the students and staffs engaged in friendly competitions, highlighting the spirit of Onam. Musical chairs, ball-passing, water-filling, and uriadi games added a layer of joy and camaraderie, as we all relished the simple pleasure of playing together. The smiles, laughter, and playful banter echoed through the courtyard, reminding us of the joyous spirit that Onam embodies.
As the memorable day wrapped up, we felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and happiness. Thakarthonam 2024 was not just an event; it filled our hearts, leaving us with cherished memories and a renewed appreciation for one another.

A Heartfelt Reflection on Anti-ragging Week
Dr. T. M. Vasudevan, professor and head of the department, began the event with the discussion on the gravity of ragging - its legal implications, ethical violations, and the undeniable harm it inflicts on individuals.
Mr. Sreehari, our research scholar, moved the audience with his personal narrative of enduring ragging during his college days, and how it still affects him.
Similarly, Mr. Mr. Muralikrishna, second year student of the department, opened up about his experiences of bullying during school, revealing the long-lasting effects such mistreatment can have. His words emphasized the need for a supportive community that stands against all forms of harassment, not just ragging.
Ms. Sunisha, also a research scholar, spoke about the importance of boundaries and consent, affirming that "A NO IS A NO". Her call for respect and self-awareness resonated deeply, reinforcing the message that no one should be subjected to unwanted or harmful behavior.
The talk session was
concluded by Dr. Syamili C., assistant professor, who synthesized the
shared experiences and issued a call for vigilance and
accountability. Her encouragement to report incidents of ragging to
the authorities emphasized our collective responsibility to foster a
safe and respectful environment.
The event was further continued by screening two emotional short films: "The Last Walk" and "The Unsighted". These award winning short films portrayed the severe emotional and physical consequences of ragging. Their powerful narratives served as a visual reinforcement of the day's messages, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.

National Librarians’ Day:
A tribute to Dr. S. R. Ranganathan and the Future of Library Science
August 12, 2024, marked a significant occasion as
we gathered to commemorate
National Librarians’ Day, honoring
the birth anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the revered father of
Library Science. Hosted in the Smart Classroom of the department, the
event was organized by FLISS
and DLIS. The program was a
vibrant tribute to the evolving world of libraries and the
indispensable role librarians play in shaping our knowledge
landscape.
The session was anchored by Ms. Athulya A. V. Dr. T. M. Vasudevan, professor and head of the department, presided over the event, lending his expertise and warmth to the proceedings. The inaugural speech was delivered by Dr. Dineshan Koovakkai, retired Assistant librarian from the CHMK Library and now a dedicated Freelance Information Professional. His compelling talk on “Information Management as a Career and Passion” captivated the audience, shedding light on the critical roles libraries play in education, information dissemination, and community engagement. Dr. Koovakkai emphasizes how libraries are evolving with digital transformations and how librarians are crucial in navigating this digital age. His insights emphasized the profound impact libraries have in nurturing an informed and educated society.
Ajmal Shajahan,
research scholar, delivered a heartfelt Vote of Thanks. The atmosphere
become engaging as Ms. Salini, Ms. Aiswarya and Ms. Gopika
took the stage for the quiz program. The audience
enthusiastically participated, raising their hands to answer the
questions in GK and in Library Science. Correct answers were met with
applause and delightful gifts, adding a touch of fun to the day’s
activities.
The program
continued with a thought provoking book talk, Participants including
Mr. Fayis, Ms. Akshaya and Ms. Aparna shared their reflections on
their favorite books, enriching the conversation with personal
thoughts and recommendations.
As the event
drew to close, it was evident that the National Librarians’ day,
2024 not
only honored the legacy of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, but also discussed
the vibrant future of library science. With a blend of inspiring
speeches, interactive activities, and thoughtful reflections, the
program showcased the dynamic and evolving role of libraries and
librarians in today’s digital world.

An insightful talk was delivered by Dr. Vinod V. M., University Librarian i/c, CHMK Library
on SWAYAM NPTEL, a project of MHRD which is an innovative platform
aimed at enhancing education through Massive Open Online Courses
(MOOCs), on 6th August 2024 at 10.30 am in the smart classroom of the
Department. The program was organized by FLISS.
The talk highlighted
the key features, of the platform, including its extensive range of courses
across various disciplines, which are developed and taught by esteemed
faculties of the top Indian institutions. Dr. Vinod emphasized how
SWAYAM NPTEL offers free access to high-quality educational resources,
making learning more accessible to students everywhere. He also
addressed the impact of SWAYAM NPTEL on lifelong learning and
professional development, showcasing real-life examples of how
individuals and institutions have benefited from the platform. Dr.
Vasudevan T M , Professor and Head of the Department presided over the function. 80
participants attended the talk. Dr. Syamili C, Assistant Professor
delivered Vote of Thanks.
